Star Wars Celebration started today in Orlando. The featured event was a 40th Anniversary panel with luminaries like George Lucas, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill. There was also a very moving tribute to Carrie Fisher, who died unexpectedly in December. Check out the tribute video that was shown.
There were two things I thought were really cool. First, it was an excellent song choice of “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie. Second, there’s a brief snippet of Carrie Fisher talking about Princess Leia in French. That clip came from a French talk show in 1977 featuring Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford promoting Star Wars. Check out a longer version.
That’s a very entertaining video on a number of levels. Harrison Ford looking on, slightly disengaged, while smoking a cigarette is a nice easter egg. The biggest takeaway is how poised and charming Carrie Fisher was at such a young age. Even the old French guy asking the questions was impressed by the worldliness of the 20-year-old.
There’s a line in Blade Runner that I’ll always remember that goes, “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” That’s Carrie Fisher. She may be gone, but leaves behind lasting memories. May she rest in peace.
